A Walk Through History: The Founding of SMU
SMU’s story begins in 1911 when the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, laid the groundwork for a new university in Dallas. The first building, Dallas Hall, was designed in a stunning Georgian Colonial Revival style influenced by the Roman Pantheon and Thomas Jefferson’s architecture . Its cornerstone was laid on Thanksgiving Day in 1912 , and the building opened in 1915, housing the entire university . Dallas Hall stands as the center of the campus and is a symbol of the university’s close relationship with the city . It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 .
Dallas Hall is also the origin of SMU’s nickname. The building sits on one of the highest points in Dallas County, and when it stood alone on a flat prairie, it inspired the name “The Hilltop” .
